The collection – titled “Prologue”, is the culmination of research into contemporary living rituals in Japan. Uncovering stories through visiting users in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Kobe, the Outofstock team aims to define a new aesthetic to teak furniture and bring Scanteak closer to users’ needs.

Home Interviews in Japan

During the summer of 2011, the Outofstock team embarked on a week long intensive research trip to Japan to investigate user patterns. Outofstock conducted home interviews with Scanteak users and non-users with the aid of a translator. The resulting Prologue collection, which took more than a year of development and prototyping, features a sofa, arm chair, coffee table, TV sideboard, bookshelf, dining chair, dining table and bench, each inspired by the observation of user habits and lifestyle during the research trip.
